Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said Israel is working toward a peace treaty that was shattered when fighting broke out between Israeli and the Palestinian-based Hamas.

Livni claimed that the military offensive is aimed at stopping Palestinian rocket attacks.

Israel rejected a truce proposal earlier this week.

Pope Benedict urged the nations to end the violence in Gaza and hopes that Israelis and Palestinians will have the opportunity to live in peace.
